Benefits: There’s no longer any reason to feel self conscious about your ears. Greater self-confidence is a phone call away. The majority of ear surgeries correct protruding ears or earlobes. We can also correct ear malformations, asymmetry, and stretched lobes.
We perform ear surgery on adults and children, but the ideal age is five or six years old. At this age, the ear is already 90 percent of its adult size and almost completely formed, yet the cartilage is soft and pliable. Ideally, classmate teasing has not started yet.
How Is It Done?
• Children receive general anesthetic; most teens or adults receive twilight anesthetic.
• If only the lobe protrudes, we reduce the amount of skin behind it with a simple tuck, and that flattens the ear.
• If the entire ear protrudes, we correct each of the ear’s 3 areas so it looks balanced and natural. First, we make a new fold in the upper portion of the ear’s contour. The central region is flattened closer to the bone behind the ear and held in place with permanent sutures. The ear lobe is then flattened by reducing the amount of skin behind it with a small tuck.
• We then wrap a bandage around the head and ears.
Recovery:
• We replace the bandage with an ace wrap the day after surgery. You’ll wear the wrap as much as possible the first week, and at night the second week.
• You’ll have mild or moderate discomfort, which can be relieved by Tylenol.
• The sutures fall out between the 3rd and 7th day.
• You can return to school or work in a week.
• Avoid physical activity that would involve ear contact for 1 month.
• Your ears may be swollen and may have bruising or pinkness for 1-2 weeks.
• The incision is made in a crease behind the ear, so visible scarring is minimal.
